I have been approached by someone to teach her metalsmithing. I have the room and the time and feel confident that I could teach her the basics but I have no idea how to charge.
I would love to hear your comments and/or suggestions whether you are a ‘smither or not…thanks.
I love your work and would love to take a class with you. But I live too far away.....poor me...big sigh.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandi! You should check your local art centers to get an idea what teachers charge for classes first. Here in Florida an adverage class would be about $150.00, and I know my former teacher charges $50.00 per hour for private lessons. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alice....I wish I lived close enough also :-).
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy...$50/hour is what it cost me but she was a professional teacher...I am not. There are others around us that teach...good idea to check with them also.
I have often considered teaching what I love to do…lapidary. Teaching is so rewarding and you learn so much that it’s hard to say who should charge who. But aside from that thought, the question remains “how much to charge”? Don't forget who's teaching...it's a very successful artist!!
ReplyDeleteI’ll suggest how I would approach this:
1. Costs? $280 one time paid in advance or $40 paid at each lesson (Discount offered for prepay)
2. How many sessions? Eight (1 ½ hour) sessions for eight weeks
3. Make four projects
4. Price includes materials for:
a. Simple ring with cab
b. Simple necklace with cab
c. Simple bracelet with cab
5. Here’s the take away, the student will learn the principals of:
a. Ideas, sketching, and layout
b. Balance and size
c. Hand shearing, filing and sawing
d. Rolling, milling, hammering
e. Soldering and pickling
f. Grinding, filing and buffing
g. Burnishing, stone setting
h. Final finishing
i. Establishing a value
j. Simple photgraphing
k. How to deal with disappointment and starting over :)
Thank you Keith...that is really awesome advice. I not only like the price but I like your suggestion for projects and the take-away...especially "k"...been there, done that. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat Keith said! ;-)
