Perplexed

This necklace was a custom order that I spent literally hours on on the design.  When I finally finished it my customer said she didn’t want to buy it, her reason was, “The piece is nice, however Sandi not like what we discussed and does not look like the final sketch we agreed on”.

Of course I don’t want a customer buying something she/he does not want but I am beside myself trying to figure out why she feels it is not like the final sketch decided upon…what do you think?  Of course my request for a little more explanation has gone unanswered.

Oh well, I ended up with a beautiful cabochon (Avatar fern jasper) and I think, a pretty necklace for sale.

I personally think it looks exactly like the sketch. I got upset over Christmas when a customer ordered a necklace out of my shop and then sent me a note saying the piece wasn't "shiny" and asking if it were "real silver" (apparently she failed to look at the pictures and read the description where I stated the piece was made entirely of sterling silver and oxidized for contrast with a matte satin finish). It really bothered me, but everyone I spoke with said the same thing, "it's not you, it's her". People are strange. It could be she doesn't have the money or bought something else, or simply changed her mind. The necklace is beautiful, I hope it makes someone else very happy:)

Thank you Susie...I kind of think for whatever reason, she decided she didn't want it but to tell me it didn't match the sketch was just kind of bizarre...oh well.

I guess she needed the money to buy glasses cuz if she can't see that that necklace looks EXACTLY like the drawing she definitely needs them! I hate lame excuses she just needs to tell the truth! Like Susie said, she probably just doesn't have the money for whatever reason. I think this necklace is gorgeous! I love the design. I bet it doesn't last long in your shop!

hmmm . . . did she assume that the vines would be openwork and not backed? Whatever the case, at least she told you about it. What I really hate is when a customer just disappears after you list, post, email, write and work your butt off and are ignored. Maybe that only happens to me! No good faith deposit? Yeah, I'd be a bit cranky.

Thanks Amy.

The thing is that in another sketch, I drew the back plate around it and she still agreed on it...go figure.

Yeah, go figure is right. Post it - I'll bet it's already got a buyer! (Taking bets as to how long it lasts . . . )

I think it looks exactly as you sketched it. Her reason must have been money or a change of heart that she didn't want to admit to. It's gorgeous. No doubt it will make someone else very happy.

She probably either changed her mind, or ended up not having the money for it, so wanted to say it wasn't right. But I think it's exactly like the sketch and turned out gorgeous.

Wow, it looks just like the sketch! She must have another reason--like hubby getting on her about spending, or something else. I hope it does not become a huge issue for you.

It's a gorgeous piece, and I'll bet it will sell lickety split!

Sandi,

This is a beautiful piece! I am sure it won't last long in your shop. Most likely it is about the money, so don't beat yourself up.

Urghh its happened to me but like you spent far too much energy wondering what went wrong. There's non so queer as folk ~ great saying {Might be a Cornish one but works internationally I think} Sometimes we never really get inside a customers head do we ;) Its a beautifully designed and made pendant ~ soon it will be off to a new home I'm sure x

It's a stunning piece - and it is her loss in the end! It is going to make someone very happy!

What a pain. Some customers just don't get the amount of time and effort involved in custom orders. It's obviously just an excuse. But it's gorgeous. I hope it sells fast for you:)

Sandi...it looks very much like the sketch....i just don't think she wanted to pay for whatever reason and made up a flimsy excuse. I've done 2 custom designs...and with both...we agreed on an overall shape and then the rest was up to me. Plus i give you credit for being able to execute a design from a sketch...i've yet to do that!

Thanks everyone...I think we have all drawn the same conclusion...she just didn't want it for whatever reason.

Yes I agree with Sue, It has nothing to do with the excuse she gave, still it's lovely, I hope you sell it pronto.

It is very pretty! Don't you hate when that happens??

I too wondered if she thought the vines were to be open backed.....but maybe not. or less tightly coiled. those are the only things that I see that are a little bit different from the sketch that you show. ut it sounds like there were other sketches, so who knows!!! Its frustrating when that happens on custom work because its SO personal. You try so hard to bring to life someone elses vision. I applaud you for doing custom work and the piece is lovely and it will sell quickly I am sure!

Well, Sandi, I have to say it looks just like the sketch and this is her loss. It's a stunning piece and I'm sure it will be snapped up very soon. Very frustrating for you though.

Wow, that' really sucks Sandi! I think it looks exactly like what you made, but some people have a different working mind- maybe it didn't translate to her. But what I really think was that maybe while you were making it she had more time to think and didn't want to spend the money.

I think that's a horrible thing to do to a handmade artist, and have been through several lengthy back and forths with customers only to have them jump out too. It doesn't feel good. But you know? I guess that's just the game we play sometimes. Sorry this happened to you, but it's a beautiful piece!

P.S.- I came here via Amy's blog:)
